Established in 1973, the Hemoglobinopathy Laboratory at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland is internationally recognized as a clinical resource for the diagnosis of hemoglobin disorders.

  • Comprehensive services using state-of-the-art protein chemistry and molecular methods for the detection of hemoglobinopathies.

  • CLIA and CAP certified; results of testing released to referring health care professionals for use in diagnosis, counseling, and development of a treatment plan.

  • Reference laboratory to the California State Newborn Screening Follow-up Program, and the Children's Oakland Comprehensive Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Centers.

  • Diagnostic testing for cord blood repositories across the country and internationally.
